Día de los Muertos - Day of the DEAD ART WORKSHOP

Colville, WA – Nancy De Los Santos, (pronounced: dell los santoes) Los Angeles-based documentary filmmaker and screenwriter, will conduct an arts workshop on the Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos (pronounced: dee ah day los moo air toes--Day of the Dead) at the Colville Public Library, from 7-9 pm, on Thursday, October 25th. Located at 195 South Oak Street, Garden Level. Cost is $25. please reserve your space early, as space is limited. Call 675-1915 to reserve your space.

Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and many U.S. cities on November 1st and 2nd. On this day, in the Mexican tradition and based in Aztec culture, it is believed that our loved ones who have passed away visit us in spirit form. To make them feel welcomed, Mexican families construct a homemade ‘altar’ with photos of their deceased, a few of their favorite worldly possessions, and some food and drink to enjoy after their trip home.  In the modern day beliefs, it’s a great day to remember those who have left us, share stories about their lives, look at their photos, and have their favorite food and drink available – just in case they do stop by for a visit!

Participants of the workshop will be guided has they construct a home altar dedicated to one or many of their loved ones. Participants are asked to bring photos of deceased loved ones, small or miniature items that remind them of their loved one(s), be it favorite pet, book, music…or whatever says “I remember…”

All items should fit into a large size shoe box. Bring a large shoebox of your own choosing, or one will be provided. The workshop will also provide craft materials to decorate the altars in the Mexican tradition.
